I registered my PhD on September 2012 and I finished my MSc in 2007.
It was 5 years gap between study and working life. I admit it was quite hard for me to adapt to student's life where you don't to wake up early in the morning and everything you did was on your own initiative. Yeah I became a very good procrastinator. Like a VERY good one !!!
And I am quite lucky I guess as my supervisor is not the demanding and micro management type.. I made it clear to her that this research topic was new to me and I need time to learn the basic.
Yes. She understand and I managed to survive my first year =)
Proud of myself.
Below is the list of what I did in my first year :
- Study from the basic of my research field : Thermodynamic, Numerical method, Fire Dynamic, etc. - Yes I started from basic as I didn't learned all that in my BSc and MSc.
- Read lots of journal. I tried my best to make sure at least 3 journals per week. - I did the summary on paper.. which then I changed to digital based on my second year, which I thought more organise =) But I still do my paper based sometimes..I am old school..LOL
- Literature review
- Planning of my work to be done to complete my PhD. -now the progress NOT on SCHEDULE =( I am still waiting for my samples.
- Write my First Year confirmation report..we call it Transfer report which like transition from PhD candidate to PhD student. If you did not pass you will be given one more year to write your MPhil report and submit. - I PASSED =)
- And I went for vacations outside UK ---- France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland. =p
WORK HARD . PLAY HARDER.
I truly think that PhD journey is unique for each of us. As for me I did not start my experiment in first year..but lots of my friends started their Lab work during first year.. No pressure I guess as long as we are going to the same direction. =) My journey might be the bumpy one..but I will try my best to make it work.
AND
to answer the question .... I HAVE NO REGRET...just several things which I should change or improve such as don't be LAZY...!
